UAE, December 6 , 2016 - The Smart Dubai Office has partnered with the University of Surrey, a highly ranked university in the United Kingdom, to provide PhD students the opportunity to research on one of the world’s fastest growing topics – Smart Cities. Students who take up the offer will be provided with actual data from the Smart Dubai Office and its strategic partners and will then be presented with real projects and challenges to be addressed, all a part of the path to making Dubai the happiest city on Earth.
The opportunity includes participation in one of two projects – Urban Design and Digital Storytelling. Given the complexity of designing smart cities of the future, Urban Design revolves around reconsidering conventional approaches to user-centered design. Participatory design frameworks are more applicable now, where communities are brought together with planners, architects and developers to discuss requirements and plans before work takes place. The Urban Design project aims to explore such a process by using participatory narratives. Communities will be encouraged to make narratives of the past, present and future of an urban area, for consideration and response by planners and designers in the design process.
The Digital Storytelling project revolves around tourist experiences. The way in which tourists capture and share records of their trips has changed in recent years due to the ubiquity of digital photography and social media. More photography and videography material is recorded now than ever before, but this is getting lost in a sea of hidden digital material that is difficult to share and enjoy. The Digital Storytelling project will explore solutions to this problem through the more selective capture of more immersive experience records and their assembly into physical and digital narratives based on a scrapbook metaphor. A combination of design ethnography, prototyping and field trials will be used in the investigation.
Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office, said: “The two PhD programs available are an unparalleled opportunity for students to enhance their skills in Smart City management and implementation. These students will be leaders of tomorrow and their thought leadership will be crucial to the continuing success of the Smart Dubai Office and the growth of Dubai.”
While the academic supervision of the program will be directly under the University of Surrey, qualified Smart Dubai Office representatives will act as ‘industrial’ supervisors to guide the students towards the right context in line with the Smart Dubai initiative.
Candidates will need to obtain their own source of funding for the educational and living expenses, however Emiratis can apply for financial support from the regular government channels who sponsor international graduate programs. The Smart Dubai office will provide financial support towards major conference attendances and for certain project software and hardware requirements.

"مكتب دبي الذكية" يقدّم لطلبة الدكتوراه فرصة فريدة من نوعها لإجراء بحوث حول المدن الذكية
الإمارات، 6 ديسمبر، 2016 - ضمن إطار الجهود والمساعي الرامية إلى الإرتقاء بدبي لتكون المدينة الأسعد على وجه الأرض، عقد مكتب دبي الذكية شراكة مع "جامعة سري" "University of Surrey" التي تعدّ في مصاف الجامعات الرائدة والمرموقة في المملكة المتحدة، بهدف إتاحة الفرصة أمام طلبة الدكتوراه للقيام ببحوث حول أحد المواضيع الأسرع نموًا في العالم اليوم وهو موضوع المدن الذكية. وبموجب هذه الشراكة يزوّد مكتب دبي الذكية وشركاؤه الاستراتيجيون الطلاب الراغبين في خوض هذه التجربة ببيانات فعلية ويعرضون عليهم مشاريع وتحديات واقعية لإيجاد الحلول اللازمة لها.
وينضوي هذا التعاون تحت لواء مشروعين يتناول أولهما التصميم الحضري ويتمحور ثانيهما حول صناعة القصص الرقمية. ونظرا إلى تعقّد عملية تصميم المدن الذكية المستقبلية، يتمحور موضوع التصميم الحضري حول إعادة النظر في المقاربات التقليدية وتصويبها نحو تلبية تطلعات المستخدمين واحتياجاتهم، بخاصة أنه أصبح من المتعارف عليه اليوم اعتماد أطر التصميم التشاركي، حيث تجتمع المجتمعات والمخططين والمهندسين والمطورين لمناقشة المتطلبات والشروط والخطط قبل البدأ بالعمل. ويهدف مشروع التصميم الحضري إلى استكشاف واختبار هذه العملية من خلال استخدام قصص تشاركية. ولهذه الغاية يتم تشجيع المجتمعات على تصوير ماضي وحاضر ومستقبل منطقة حضرية على صورة حكاية ليتم النظر وإبداء الرأي فيها من قبل المخطّطين والمصممّين خلال عملية التصميم.
أما موضوع صناعة القصص الرقمية فيستند إلى تجارب السياح. فخلال السنوات الأخيرة، شهدت عملية التقاط ومشاركة السياح للحظاتٍ ولقطاتٍ من رحلاتهم تغيرًا كبيرًا نجم عن شيوع التصوير الرقمي ووسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. وبالتالي باتت نسبة تسجيل المواد الرقمية من صور وفيديوهات تفوق نسبتها في أي وقت مضى ولكنها تضيع في بحر من المواد الرقمية المخبأة وبالتالي تصعب مشاركتها والاستمتاع بها. ومن هذا المنطلق صُمّم مشروع صناعة القصص الرقمية بهدف إيجاد حلول لهذه المسألة من خلال تطبيق مبدأ الانتقائية في التقاط وتسجيل تجارب غامرة وجمعها في حكايات روائية مادية ورقمية ضمن عملية شبيهة بإعداد سجل القصاصات. وستتضمن البحوث مزيجا من التصميم الاثنولوجي والنمذجة والتجارب الميدانية.
وفي تعليق لها على هذا الشراكة قالت سعادة الدكتورة عائشة بن بشر، مدير عام مكتب دبي الذكية: "من خلال هذين البرنامجين نقدّم لطلبة الدكتوراه فرصة فريدة من نوعها لتطوير مهاراتهم في مجال إدارة المدن الذكية وتنفيذها. هؤلاء الطلاب هم قادة الغد وستؤدي قيادتهم الفكرية دورا حاسما في مواصلة نجاح مكتب دبي الذكية ودعم نمو إمارة دبي".
ستتولى "جامعة سري" "University of Surrey" الإشراف الأكاديمي المباشر على برنامجي الشراكة، وسيؤدي ممثلون مؤهلون عن مكتب دبي الذكية دور المشرفين "الصناعيين" لتوجيه الطلاب نحو سياق العمل الصحيح بما يتماشى مع أهداف مبادرة دبي الذكية.
ويتعيّن على المرشحين تأمين مصادر التمويل لتغطية نفقات تعليمهم ومعيشتهم، ويمكن للطلاب الإماراتيين التقدّم بطلبات للحصول على مساعدات مالية من القنوات الحكومية التي ترعى برامج الدراسات العليا الجامعية. ومن جانبه، سيسهم مكتب دبي الذكية في تقديم دعم مادي لحضور المحاضرات والمؤتمرات الرئيسة ولشراء بعض معدات الحواسيب والبرمجيات.
وقال الدكتور علي العزاوي، الخبير الاستشاري في مجال تجربة المدينة في مكتب دبي الذكية: "تعزيز السعادة هو الهدف المطلق لمكتب دبي الذكية، لذلك نحن نلتزم بالعمل مع طلاب الدكتوراه لتشجيعهم على وضع سعادة المدن في المقام الأول في كافة المشاريع التي سيعملون عليها. ويستأثر اهتمامنا رصد آراء وملاحظات طلاب يتشاركون هدفا مشتركا مع دبي الذكية لنكتسب معرفة من الدروس والعبر التي سيستخلصونها.
